Trump posts racist tweet telling Democratic lawmakers to go back where they came from

President Donald Trump blew his racist nativist dog-whistle on Sunday morning in a tweet telling a foreign-born Democratic lawmaker to go back where she came from.

Presumably aimed at Rep. Ihan Omar (D-Minn.) but addressed to four progressive Democratic congresswomen, Trump lashed out at them for criticizing systemic racism and inequality in the United States.

Trump is referring to Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) and Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.), all of whom are known as “The Squad” and for unapologetically defending progressive policies and demanding America be better.

However, it should be pointed out that only Omar is foreign-born because she was born in Somalia and came here as a refugee. The other three were born in the United States. Ocasio-Cortez was born in New York, Ayanna Pressley in Illinois and Tlaib in Michigan.

What they all have in common, however, is that they are women of color. So Trump thinks that means they must not be natural born citizens. Does he feel that way about all people of color? It certainly sounds like it.

This racist Twitter tantrum makes House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) look bad since she has been attacking these four women, because right now it looks like she and Trump are united against them. Pelosi has been writing them off as if their voices don’t matter within the Democratic Party. If anything, that makes Pelosi look weak and deals a blow to her own progressive credentials.

Trump, meanwhile, looks like the racist we know he is.

Regardless of where they were born, all of these lawmakers are United States citizens and all were elected by a majority of voters to serve in public office. Trump can’t say the same since he lost the popular vote in 2016.
