Chris Wallace drags Republicans for whining about investigations against Trump during Whitaker hearing

Fox News anchor Chris Wallace advised Republicans to stop their hypocritical whining on Friday after a GOP lawmaker complained about investigations against President Donald Trump during acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker’s testimony at a House Judiciary Committee hearing.

During the State of the Union address on Tuesday, Trump demanded a halt to all investigations into his misconduct and the misconduct of his administration, which includes Whitaker.

Since taking control of the House, Democrats have sought to finally provide a check on Trump’s executive power and be the oversight that Republicans refused to be when they had control.

At the hearing, Rep. Doug Collins (R-Ga.) lashed out at Democrats for wanting to question Whitaker, who took over the Justice Department after Trump promoted him to Attorney General without confirmation by the Senate, which puts him in charge of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe, an investigation Trump has desperately tried to killed for two years.

Naturally, Democrats want to know if Whitaker is interfering with the probe for Trump, but Republicans like Collins cried foul.

“Yesterday was nothing but pure political theater, it was wonderful!” Collins said. “It was a time for hide and seek. The chairman had a hearing, let’s do a subpoena, we’re going to stand tough! If my friend on the other side of this aisle wanted to do a confirmation hearing, they ought to do it up front, and if they want to do a confirmation hearing on senators, run for Senate. This is not a confirmation hearing, this is a Department of Justice oversight hearing, supposedly — oops, I’m sorry, back to theatrics again. The curtain opened up and we found out what’s going on. No, we want to damage the president. This hearing is pointless!”

Fox News host Bill Hemmer asked Wallace about his take on the hearing, and he responded by pointing out the hypocrisy of Collins’ whining.

“I do find it kind of rich that Republicans are so outraged that there would be this kind of a hearing of the other party’s president and administration,” he said. “It’s not like Republicans sat on their hands when Barack Obama was president. They investigated Benghazi, they investigated ‘Fast and Furious,’ they investigated the IRS.”

That’s part of oversight,” Wallace concluded. “As Barack Obama famously said, ‘Elections have consequences.’ When Republicans have oversight of a branch of Congress and they’re investigating a Democratic president, they’re going to make life difficult for them and now Democrats have control of these committees and they are going to make life difficult for the Trump administration. That’s the way it works.”

Indeed, Republicans have no right to whine after they spent four years trying to persecute Hillary Clinton for Benghazi even though they found zero evidence to charge her with any kind of crime or negligence.

Furthermore, if Republicans had done their jobs when they controlled Congress instead of doing everything in their power to rig the system in defense of Trump, Democrats would not have to restart these investigations. But Trump and his Republican cronies in Congress have done everything they can to undermine the Russia probe. And by all rights Republicans like Collins should thank their lucky stars they aren’t being investigated for obstructing a federal investigation. Perhaps Democrats should consider such a probe. It would give Republicans something to really cry about.
