Florida Students Take Their Fight For Gun Control To Washington

This week Americans have been schooled by a group of high school students over and over again on the need for gun control reform in the United States. The brave and powerful responses from the students who survived Wednesday’s mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School have been awe-inspiring. And they’re not done yet – a group of students will march their voices straight to Washington next month.

According to Huffington Post, the march will be appropriately named “March For Our Lives.” The march in Washington D.C. is already gaining traction, but sister marches will be expected in cities across the country.

Five students announced over the weekend on TV appearances:

“Here’s the time: March 24. In every single city, we are going to be marching together as students begging for our lives. this isn’t about the GOP. This isn’t about the Democrats. This is about the adults. We feel neglected. At this point, you’re either with us or you’re against us.”

In a speech that went viral on social media over the weekend, student Emma Gonzalez called out Donald Trump for attempting to make the issue about mental illness instead of easy access to assault weapons. Her powerful words echo the significance of this movement. Students in Parkland have vowed to make this the last mass shooting:

“We are going to be the kids you read about in textbooks. Not because we’re going to be another statistic about mass shooting in America, but because, just as David said, we are going to be the last mass shooting.”

This has to be the NRA’s worst nightmare. And it’s a powerful lesson for all of America: we have to listen to our youth. The next generation of adults has been left with a world so broken they have no choice but to fight back.

And these kids aren’t backing down, as David Hogg notes:

“And the future of our country are those children that are currently dying because our politicians refuse to take action and continue to take money from special interest groups.”
