Former Rep. Tom Coleman (R-Mo.) took Republicans to the woodshed on Thursday evening for failing to stand up to President Donald Trump by accurately comparing them to characters from the Wizard of Oz.
Coleman recently called for Trump to be impeached last month in response to the damning Mueller report and implored Senate Republicans to do the right thing and oust him from office instead of continuing to let him walk all over Congress and the Constitution.
Thus far, Republicans have refused to heed his call just as they have refused to follow Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.) after he also called for impeachment, remaining the only Republican in Congress to do so.
On Thursday, Coleman appeared on MSNBC with Ari Melber and trashed them by comparing them to Wizard of Oz characters.
“They’ve lost their way,” he began. “And they never find their way back. And I doubt if they stand up to Trump. If this is settled, it’s going to be settled in the back rooms of the Capitol or offsite at the White House somewhere. And it just won’t happen.”
He first compared Republicans to the Munchkins, who were scared of the seemingly “all-powerful” wizard before he was revealed as a fraud.
“I have thought long and hard about what’s wrong with Republicans,” he said. “And I kind of think they’re like the Munchkins in the land of Oz. They’re really afraid of the wizard until they drew back the curtain and found out it was just a guy with a microphone. And I think we have a lot of that going on here.”
Then he compared them to the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion, because they have no brains, no hearts and no courage.
“So, you know, in The Wizard of Oz, we had the Scarecrow who needed a brain, we had a Tin Man who needed a heart, and a lion who needed courage,” Coleman concluded. “So the Republicans need to take their cue from there. They need to use their own brains instead of letting Trump think for them. They need to follow their heart and do what’s right. And finally, they need the courage to stand up to this wannabe dictator and find out. And I think maybe the Congress is going to pull that curtain and they’ll find out that the guy behind the curtain is just an overweight loudmouth.”
