Kellyanne Conway’s husband George Conway spent Sunday evening and Monday morning humiliating President Donald Trump after the resignation of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.
Nielsen resigned after two years of chaos and controversy defined by Trump’s desire to break immigration laws and his order to separate children from their parents at the border.
She had dated her resignation to be effective on April 7th, yet she had to announce she would stay on until later this week after Trump botched the announcement of her successor because the law says that Undersecretary Claire Grady would become acting Homeland Security chief, not Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan.
maybe you should take a look at the United States code https://t.co/nULkSP4Dgj

because under the rather explicit terms of 6 U.S.C. §113(g), here’s your new Acting Secretary of Homeland Security:https://t.co/ooD0ytES5j

Conway then explained that while the law gave Trump a little wiggle room to appoint Matt Whitaker as acting Attorney General, it doesn’t for the DHS post.
With the significant difference that, here, in contrast to the situation involving the AG, the statute governing DHS succession *expressly forecloses* the application of the Federal Vacancies Reform Act. https://t.co/MdMqBio4Y0

Conway then slammed Trump for incompetently botching the announcement of Nielsen’s successor.
Her letter said “effective April 7”—yesterday. They must have realized late last night how Trump incompetently botched the naming of her successor without having someone check the statute. But was the resignation letter accepted? https://t.co/c8l0F2gIXX

He then turned his attention to Nielsen’s letter, which like former Secretary of Defense James Mattis’ resignation letter, does not mention Donald Trump.

Conway went on to twice retort that America doesn’t have a president in response to tweets pointing out that the United States does not have a confirmed Secretary of Defense, nor does it have a confirmed DHS Secretary.
we don’t really have a president https://t.co/BcVOTDc12i

In all seriousness, we have no competent, functioning president. https://t.co/UzpkRxF5nO

All of these points, like Conway’s other points that he has been making to great effect since he began criticizing Trump, are spot on.
America’s ability to function has been kneecapped by Trump, a mad tyrant who thinks he is above the law and can break any law he chooses. He refuses to nominate real successors to Cabinet posts because he wants those nominees to be totally loyal to him and not accountable to Congress or the American people. He is a disgrace and if Republicans really cared about our country and the Constitution, they would impeach him immediately.
