Jeff Daniels explains why it will be the ‘end of democracy’ if Trump wins in 2020

Award-winning actor Jeff Daniels is currently starring as Atticus Finch in a Broadway production of Harper Lee’s timeless novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, and during an appearance on MSNBC Monday afternoon, he warned that if President Donald Trump is re-elected in 2020, it will be the “end of democracy.”

Speaking with host Nicolle Wallace on “Deadline: White House,” Daniels said the Trump phenomenon and the way normally decent people flock to his side is probably best explained from a line in the play, which was written for the stage by Aaron Sorkin:

“A mob is a place where people go to take a break from their conscience.”

Daniels then went on to add that he sees evidence of that line anytime he watches a Trump rally:

“That’s what I see when I look at Donald Trump’s rallies. That’s when I see the lies spewing at these people and people going, ‘I gotta believe in something,’ and he said he’d bring my manufacturing job back and she didn’t, and I’m all in.’ But at the end of the day, aside from ‘Yeah, I don’t wanna pay taxes,’ it’s race. It’s race.’”

Can anyone plausibly deny that Daniels is right on the money with his comments? Trump rips brown babies from their immigrant parents at the border and his supporters cheer even louder. Trump slams black NFL players for daring to kneel in protest during the National Anthem and thousands of Trump acolytes stop watching pro football. Why? It’s race. It’s race.

While he was at it, Daniels also noted that the Republican Party is complicit in Trump’s crimes, and they’re also motivated by a desire to maintain their fading relevance as a political force:

“This is about the Republican Party, or a wing of it, going ‘This is our last chance to save the party. And if we don’t, it’s the end of the Republican Party.’ And the only way they can do that was to tap the race button and say, ‘Go ahead, it’s OK.’ And he (Trump) did. And they did. That was the only card they had left to play, and they played it. And they aren’t going to go quietly.”

The clip of Jeff Daniels has now gone viral, and it needs to be seen by every American who cares about the future of this country.
