Majority of Americans trust Mueller more than Trump: New poll

Trump Mueller

While President Donald Trump continues to refer to the investigation into the 2016 election being conducted by Special Counsel Robert Mueller as a “hoax” and a “witch hunt,” a just released poll shows that the majority of Americans say Mueller is more credible than Trump.

“A Washington Post/Schar School poll released Tuesday found that 56 percent of Americans surveyed said they view Mueller as more credible, while 33 percent said they trusted the president’s version of the facts more.”

Additionally, 57 percent said Mueller was more interested in “finding the truth” than “hurting Trump politically.”

A closer look inside the poll has more bad news for the president:

  • Fifty-seven percent of independents said they trust Mueller’s credibility over Trump’s, while 29 percent said they trusted the president. Independents are usually the key to any national election, especially with the electorate so polarized.

Schar School dean Mark Rozell noted:

“On the face of it, partisans have lined up predictably in their respective camps.”

The party breakdown in the poll supports Schar’s assertion, with 86 percent of Democrats polled saying they are more likely to believe Mueller’s version of the facts. 74 percent of Republicans said they trusted Trump’s.

However, most Americans remain open-minded about what results Mueller will find regarding the Russian attack on the 2016 presidential race and a possible conspiracy between Trump and the Kremlin, Schar added:

“There are a significant number of people keeping an open mind about what the report will ultimately conclude.”

Two months ago, a poll conducted by HillTV/American Barometer indicated that 58 percent of Americans believe that the special counsel is conducting an “unbiased” investigation into the Trump campaign.

Despite these numbers, Trump has continued to rail against the Russia probe, saying recently that any collusion with Russia was on the part of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton:

It certainly appears that most Americans think Trump is the larger problem, not Mueller.
