According to “Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough, there’s a reason President Donald Trump is obsessed with being impeached: He thinks it’ll help his dismal job approval rating if it appears he’s under attack from Democrats in Congress.
Thursday morning, MSNBC analyst John Heilemann told Scarborough he found it odd that Trump was unwilling to even say “impeachment” during his impromptu press conference Wednesday afternoon in the Rose Garden and kept calling it “the I-word”:
“The ‘I-word’ — what’s that about?. Is he trying to impeachment into a profanity? Or is it just the word ‘impeachment’ is in his head to a degree that he just can’t bring himself to say it.”
That’s when Scarborough floated his theory:
“He wants to be impeached so badly, so the Senate can then decide that he’s not going to be convicted, can acquit him, and he saw what happened with Bill Clinton whose presidency he looks at and studies an awful lot and he saw that Bill Clinton went up to 60 percent after he was impeached.”
Scarborough then added that Trump can sense that as 2020 approaches, he has no accomplishments to run on:
“He’s got no record to run on, other than making his billionaire friends at Mar-A-Lago, other friends who hang out at Mar-A-Lago, like Jeffrey Epstein — he made those people a lot of money. Other than that, he doesn’t have much to show for it for Democrats and independents.
“He wants to be victimized, he loves to be victimized. As Nancy Pelosi said yesterday, ‘Oh, poor baby.’”
Co-host Mika Brzezinski concurred:
“This is a president who’s desperate to be impeached. He’s desperate to turn the attention on him in the most chaotic way.”
Trump is also trying to divert attention from his many growing scandals and court fights. Just yesterday, another judge ruled that his financial records must be released to congressional investigators, and the New York state legislature voted overwhelmingly to turn over the president’s state tax returns to various investigative committees.
A man who thrives on chaos like Donald Trump thinks more chaos can save him. How pathetic is that?
