NAACP unanimously calls for the House to impeach Trump

House Democrats are facing even more pressure to do the right thing and impeach President Donald Trump because the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) just unanimously called for impeachment proceedings to begin.

Democrats have been balking at impeaching Trump for months despite his obstruction crimes as outlined by the Mueller report as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) continues to drag her feet.

As Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) delivered remarks to the delegates in the wake of his failed effort to introduce articles of impeachment in response to Trump’s racist attack on four Democratic congresswomen of color, the NAACP unanimously passed a resolution demanding impeachment.

The vote came just a day after Pelosi delivered remarks to the convention on Monday.

In a statement, NAACP President Derrick Johnson explained why the delegates voted for impeachment.

“The pattern of Trump’s misconduct is unmistakable and has proven time and time again, that he is unfit to serve as the president of this country,” Johnson said. “From his attempts to curtail the scope of Robert Mueller’s investigation to calling out minority congresswomen and telling them to go back to their countries, to caging immigrant children without food or water to his numerous attempts to avert the Supreme Court’s decision to not add in the citizenship question to the 2020 Census – this president has led one of the most racist and xenophobic administrations since the Jim Crow era. Trump needs to know that he is not above the law and the crimes that he has committed and he must be prosecuted. We will make sure that the NAACP is at the forefront of pushing Congress to proceed with the impeachment process.”

It’s pretty clear that House Democrats have more than enough reasons to impeach him. And as Trump continues to defy subpoenas and flout the rule of law and congressional authority, the reasons just keep piling up. Perhaps the tide will turn once Special Counsel Robert Mueller testifies later this week. If not, it may be time for the NAACP to withhold endorsements and campaign donations from Democratic candidates until they do what should have been done months ago.
