Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) took direct aim at Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) this week for vowing to kill any legislation that will help struggling Americans if he is allowed to stay in power.
During a speaking event in his home state, McConnell attacked so-called “socialist legislation” such as the Green New Deal and universal healthcare and bragged that conservatives can count on him to be the “Grim Reaper” of the Senate if he remains in power because he won’t allow votes on these popular policies.
“We are having a legitimate debate about the virtues of socialism and I don’t want you to think it’s just a 28-year-old congresswoman from New York,” McConnell said in reference to Ocasio-Cortez. “This is much broader than that. I’ve got five colleagues in the Senate, five colleagues running for president, who have signed on to the Green New Deal and Medicare For All.”
In fact, a majority of Americans support universal healthcare and the Green New Deal, both of which would transform the nation and provide desperately needed help to struggling Americans across the country by making healthcare less expensive and more accessible while creating millions of new jobs to turn America into a clean energy powerhouse.
“I don’t want you to think this is just a couple of nutcases running around on the fringe,” McConnell continued. “This is pervasive policy view on the other side. Are we going to turn this into a socialist country? Don’t assume it cannot happen. If I’m still the majority leader of the Senate, think of me as the Grim Reaper. None of that stuff is going to pass. None of it.”
Clearly, McConnell has no intention of stopping his obstructionist ways, which is why he needs to be brought down in 2020, either by defeat for his seat or by making Democrats the new Senate majority.
Ocasio-Cortez fired back at McConnell on Thursday by calling him out for personally profiting on his obstruction of legislation that would change the country for the better.

Bringing the nation to a screeching halt to prevent the passage of bills that would help all Americans is selfish and un-American. Mitch McConnell’s stranglehold on the Senate is hurting the nation for the benefit of the wealthy and McConnell’s own piggy bank. It’s time to follow leaders like Ocasio-Cortez towards a brighter future and consign McConnell to the dustbin of history where he belongs so our government can function properly for the people again.
