Trump Attorney Urges DOJ To Fire Mueller A Day After Dismissal Of FBI Deputy Director

Now that the Department of Justice has fired Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe for daring to support fired FBI chief James Comey, a top attorney for President Trump is urging the DOJ to end the Mueller probe and dismiss Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Contacted by Betsy Woodruff of The Daily Beast for comment on actions taken by Attorney General Jeff Sessions to fire McCabe just two days before he became eligible for his full government pension, Trump lead attorney John Dowd sent this message via email:

“I pray that Acting Attorney General Rosenstein will follow the brilliant and courageous example of the FBI Office of Professional Responsibility and Attorney General Jeff Sessions and bring an end to alleged Russia Collusion investigation manufactured by McCabe’s boss James Comey based upon a fraudulent and corrupt Dossier.”

There’s a lot of specious claims in that declaration from Dowd, the most glaring of which are these:

  • The matter of possible collusion with Russia wasn’t “manufactured” by Comey. It has been suggested and corroborated by 17 American intelligence agencies.
  • The dossier Dowd makes reference to is, of course, the one compiled by former British agent Christopher Steele. It has never proven to be “fraudulent.” In fact, the vast majority of the dossier has been verified.

While he was at it, Dowd added this line from a well-known play to bolster his case:

“What’s that smell in this room[Bureau}? Didn’t you notice it, Brick [Jim]? Didn’t you notice a powerful and obnoxious odor of mendacity in this room[Bureau}?… There ain’t nothin’ more powerful than the odor of mendacity[corruption]… You can smell it. It smells like death.” Tennessee Williams — ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’

Apparently, Mr. Dowd doesn’t realize the irony of his daring to quote that section of the famous Tennessee Williams play. The odor of mendacity and corruption? Coming from an attorney who represents a man as corrupt and underhanded as Donald Trump, that’s downright laughable.

The Trump team is trying for a Hail Mary pass to end the Mueller investigation. What they don’t seem to understand is that if Mueller is dismissed, it will only bolster the case for Trump’s impeachment.

Here’s more on the subpoenas issued this week against the Trump Organization, which must be very troubling for Trump’s legal team:
