Roy Moore’s Defeat Completes Steve Bannon’s Fall From Grace

There was a time right after Donald Trump won the 2016 election that some were hailing Steve Bannon as a political genius, a man who had managed to guide Trump to victory despite being outspent by his Democratic opponent.

But those days are long gone. And with the loss of Bannon’s handpicked candidate for the Alabama Senate race, Roy Moore, on Tuesday, the bloom is clearly off the Bannon rose.

On his show Tuesday evening, MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell couldn’t resist sharing a video of a seemingly stunned Bannon as he left Moore campaign headquarters and got into a waiting Cadillac Escalade. Before he showed the video, O’Donnell commented:

“We now have the video of Steve Bannon tonight, his first reaction to this huge defeat for Steve Bannon personally. The only hint I have for you before you see it is that Steve Bannon is speechless.”

In the video, Bannon walks toward the vehicle and a reporter calls out:

“Mr. Bannon, isn’t this a huge defeat for you?”

No reaction at all from the thunderstruck Bannon. Just a dull gaze and a shuffle as he got into the SUV.

The loss of Roy Moore is a huge setback for Bannon, who has returned to the far-right “news” site Breitbart. Bannon has bravely declared “war” on mainstream Republicans ever since he was ousted from his position as a top White House adviser. And now that war looks to be in shambles, with General Bannon licking his wounds and in full retreat.
