President Donald Trump accused Democrats of treason for not clapping for him during the State of the Union, and Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) destroyed him for it.
On Monday evening, Trump spoke during a rally in Ohio and used the occasion to attack Democrats, including whining about them not applauding him last Tuesday.
“They were like death and un-American. Un-American. Somebody said, ‘treasonous.’ I mean, Yeah, I guess why not? Can we call that treason? Why not? I mean they certainly didn’t seem to love our country that much.”
Trump’s words caused much outrage, especially since the definition of treason does not include not clapping for the president, something Duckworth reminded Trump on Twitter.

And then Duckworth really threw the book at Trump, informing him that she’s a combat veteran and that Americans do not live in a dictatorship.
We don’t live in a dictatorship or a monarchy. I swore an oath—in the military and in the Senate—to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, not to mindlessly cater to the whims of Cadet Bone Spurs and clap when he demands I clap https://t.co/99gW1yalDl

Duckworth lost both of her legs fighting for our country. Trump, on the other hand, received five deferments to avoid the draft during the Vietnam War. The military issued one of those deferments with the excuse that Trump, a top athlete in college, could not serve because of alleged bone spurs in his foot.
Duckworth then shared a quote by Theodore Roosevelt, one of the last great Republican presidents, who said that it’s “morally treasonable” to say that people are not allowed to criticize the president.
Thankfully, there are better quotes from better Republican Presidents. Here’s one from Theodore Roosevelt—a Republican who earned the applause he received—that Trump might want to consider pic.twitter.com/WAhvB23zGJ

We should point out that Republicans repeatedly refused to clap and applaud President Obama throughout the eight years he served in office. Republicans also refused to work with Obama and vowed to sabotage his administration at every turn.
For Republicans like Trump to accuse Democrats of treason simply for not clapping for him is outrageous. It’s time for Republicans to oust Trump from office. He has been nothing but an embarrassment to the presidency, and let’s not forget that he has allegedly committed obstruction of justice several times and may have committed conspiracy with the Russians to interfere with our democratic process. Those crimes are much closer to treason than anything Democrats have done.
