You’ve probably seen Republican pollster Frank Luntz on various cable news shows, often doing focus groups with voters to try and determine which way the political winds are blowing and issues that concern the nation.
But on Tuesday, Luntz got hit by a giant dose of karma and Twitter ridicule after he blamed a broken elevator at a hotel in Austria on “European-style socialism,” choosing to make his ignorance public for all the world to see on social media:
I’m at the Hotel Imperial in Vienna, Austria. Almost 200 rooms… But the elevator has been broken for 3 days.
Please don’t bring European-style socialism to America. ? pic.twitter.com/axeygJSoBi

If Luntz had bothered to do a bit of research before he posted that tweet, he would have discovered that it’s owned by the Marriott chain, which just so happens to be headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland.
Also, what in the world does socialism have to do with whether an elevator is working? It either works or it doesn’t, and there are plenty of non-operational elevators in the United States, too.
But at least something good came out of Luntz’s faux pas: The responses he got:
the Imperial Vienna is privately held but speaking of socialism, congrats on being publicly owned

Crap, it’s already here. An elevator in my office building has been broken for four months.

Elevator is broken but people can take the stairs and have a heart attack they have universal healthcare.

Europe has capitalism. The lift was made by capitalists. The engineers meant to repair it are paid by capitalists. The reason it has not been promptly fixed may be down to a lack of parts, as making spares under capitalism which might never be needed is commercially unattractive.

But the elevator on the Big Bang Theory was broken for 8 years.

Bloody commies running the [squints at gold-plated lift buttons] privately owned five star Hotel Imperial associated with the American-owned multi-billion dollar Marriott chain of hotels.

Thank you for your bravery, sir. I don’t think these so-called “socialists” understand the damage people like Stalin did to the elevator industry
